I've never flown a science ship, so I have only a small idea of what I'm doing. The new Research Lab consoles (represented here as normal sci consoles with not-normal modifiers, to indicate their primary/secondary mods), the crafted consoles, and deflectors/secondary deflectors let me boost flow-caps, particle gens and the grav well/TBR to silly levels without actually min/maxing anything, which means I shouldn't have to sacrifice much in order to have a decent ship, though she feels awfully squishy.

I found ideas for my build from these ships, as well as from a few things I noticed while helping another member build their ship.

This ship boosts PartGens to super silly levels:

This one is supposed to do 75k DPS:

Scientifically I do not like to set up abilities in conflict. Tractor Beam Repulsors and Gravitiy Well do not play nice together.

Hazard Emitters: Self Heal, Remove & cancel troubling Debuffs. Feel less squishy* and do not conflict** with GW.

Destabilizing Resonance Beam: Synergy with Gravity Well - herd them, flash them.

*) that is one of the few things where I am not so happy with the way the DPS centric builds go: running on DPS only means you either run with other heavy hitters to defeat your foes before unfriendly response arrives - or get used to visit the shipyard after STFs.

**) not only with your GW. I hate a TRB that moves foes out of my range or firing arcs...
Thanks, Ed!

With that in mind, here's a science-heavy variant of my build. It doubles-up on Grav Well and DRB (cooldown mitigation), while ditching TBR in favor of more heals. I also added the Vesta lance console (in a tac slot... that's why it's called theory crafting, and if I don't need to by a third compatible fleet console, so much the better, right?)

This ship will be DOFFed to keep TacTeam on global; its strategy is to rapidly group its targets with grav wells, and dispatch them with its heavy forward-firing weapons.

Using so many heals will mean picking the Restorative Particle Focuser Science Consoles from the lab.

The "3b" variant swaps out two of the lab consoles for embassy +Flow consoles, since I've been advised that these do far more damage on a B:FAW build than the maximum available particle generators.... and I already have a bunch of these in my inventory, anyway.

On Friday, I took this ship for its shakedown cruise, playing through "Blood of the Ancients" to acquire the Destablizing Resonance Beams. Last night, I took her into ISA for the first time.

Here is the actual build, because some parts are still missing (like the Sol Defense 2pc), and she's still just a T5 Vesta (not upgraded):

Despite dying 5 times, forgetting to launch shuttles, having no reputation traits slotted or any specialization points assigned (this toon was a Level 58 alt, with a long way to go), and NOT achieving 4 [AMP] procs.... she parsed 11k DPS!

The nifty thing about this ship is that, while her health can drop to the single-digits very quickly, she still survives long enough to pop "Go Down Fighting", EngTeam and RSP (and Attack Pattern Alpha, when I'm not clumsy)... and then eventually heals back to full health. That being said, she tends to die shortly after engaging the next target because EngTeam is still in Cooldown. It seems worthwhile to raise the money to replace my EngTeam DOFFs with purple-quality DOFFs because it is in those last three seconds (out of 18 seconds; global is 15 seconds) that she tends to explode. Of course, maybe the Subspace Field Modulator of the Sol Defense 2pc set might remedy this weakness, first?

When playing through the storyline missions, it is immensely satisfying to fire a gravity well into a crowd of targets 9km away, DRB one target, lance another and FAW them all into oblivion.

I was beginning to think you were as mythical as Santa, Scissors. Haven't seen you around in ages.

Funny you should say that, because this is the official bridge crew photo op for the toon that flies this ship:

That, Sir, is an amazing SS!
