The Shipyard of Whocares
#1
I thought I would post my shipyard here, and the account is Whocares1975 (thus the post name!) I've included the whole bunch.

A few things about my approach to Star Trek Online, which should help explain the oddities and general "why on earth did you do that?!" of some of them:
  • I'm a Balance Builder, so I don't try to make the best or nastiest ship out there, just the one most likely to be able to survive on ground or in space in any situation thrown at me
  • Since Delta Rising, I've gone into a more casual style of pay, so generally speaking, I haven't upgraded my stuff in a year unless I really thought it worthwhile
  • I have focused on giving each toon a specific strength or knack, so each ground and space approach is different. Some are more successful than others but each is unique to play
  • I have gone for a 'traditional Star Trek' style of build first and foremost, so every ship has a torp and an energy weapon. In some cases, this has been a real challenge but for me, that's what made many of my builds fun!
  • In-depth explanations and notes are there on each ship at STO Academy
With that out of the way...

Hello and welcome! I haunt the shipyards here, jumping from ship to ship looking for ways to offer players improved DPS, because that's what I read about when I'm bored. In light of your note for wanting balanced builds, I just wanted to ask whether you're aware that slotting armor in engineering console slots has diminishing returns, and the latest meta advises that pretty much anything is an improvement over a second armor console.

Also, Beam Overload is more useless than the [Over] crafting mod, because the ability only fires on one of your weapons, whereas the [Over] mod affects each weapon on which it is applied separately. It should have been the Beam equivalent of C:RF, but it fell very short.

Wow. Just wow. I'm impressed. A lot of your builds look very straight forward. Very "cut to the chase." I like it.

Your leeches make me jealous. What are your Rommies' alignment? I'm assuming you got that one KDF zen ship with the leech?

Thanks for both your comments!

In terms of engineering hullplating consoles, yes I am aware of their significantly diminishing returns, but I am very much one for looking "at the numbers", and then trialling in the field. I got (and kept) the two consoles because I found that one was not quite enough in the field (this may be different with people who can R&D up to Epic), and more than two meant the third did nearly nothing. In terms of "at the numbers", the Stats sub-screen in the ship's Status window shows the number difference, so that showed me it was doing a reasonable something to my Resist levels. Another aspect of my build approach is that in my mind, blowing up in a mission is a failure condition, so survival is "the first order of business."

As you can also see, my equipment is older as I have very few real R&D improvements compared to all the stuff I have. At the time I built, the [Acc] proc was considered the best, so that's what I have. Checking out the [Over] proc, yes I would probably have gone for that if building now, at least in some builds.

I never thought of my builds as "straightforward" so that amuses me... but yes, they are now that I think of it Big Grin

An outcropping of wanting each toon and ship to have a distinct "feel", is that a unique console or gimmick does not get used often no matter how great it might be. For example, Point Defense is great, but when I had it on nearly every toon it all started feeling a bit "samey" so I then limited it down a bit. This also means that if I haven't played a particular toon for a while, I can end up forgetting how to play it Rolleyes

The KDF Nausicaan Vandal Destroyer (Tier 3) comes with Plasmonic Leech, so yes, KDF and KDF-allied Romulans get access to this very snazzy console for the grand price of 1,000 zen (account-wide unlock). I allied two of my Romulans with KDF, being Tevatra the engineer, and Rinzukas the Reman. This was actually to help boost up KDF numbers rather than anything; the Plasmonic Leech is just a nice little bonus.

EDIT: I'll also point out that all my bridge bunnies have multiple skills so I can swap their skills according to mission needs. Especially tactical Lt Cmdr skill slots will have the full range: Beam Overload 3, Fire At Will 3, High Yield Torpedo 3, and Torpedo Spread 3. This way, my ships can be reconfigured very easily to have everything from a highly aggressive offensive posture, to highly defensive, to team support. It used to be that you could only reasonably achieve this with boff swapping, but with boffs now able to be trained on multiple skills, and those skills now being reasonably inexpensive (especially if you do the boff recruitment missions and create the more pricey manuals from the occasionally jackpot boffs), it's a really great system.

Thanks again for your responses!

Tevatra, your Fleet D'Deridex, and all its [+Turn] consoles gives me hope that my Romii captain will one day fly a viable ship (I choose my ships for how they look, not how highly recommended they come) Thumbup

Holy cow that's a lot of Vulnerability Exploiters on a ship that doesn't have Surgical Strikes, or [Over] mods! How does the RRW Shekhinah perform? And, out of curiosity, how did you choose her name?

I wanted to show the D'Deridex performing in the way shown in TNG, and particularly in battles against the Dominion in Deep Space Nine. This meant a forward firing arc and aggressive turn: thus, the hugely expensive Epic RCS Console. However, when you're keeping a True Way Hideki Class in your forward cannons as it tries to get away from you, it all becomes worth it Big Grin

The Daeinos was named after the death of Leonard Nimoy. "Shekhina" was a book of photography by Nimoy, with the name Shekhinah being Hebrew or Arabic for a dwelling or settlement, and in particular the settlement of a god. Being that the Daeinos was designed by the Romulan Republic, and they are settled on Dewa III, New Romulus, the settlement of the founders of Romulus after the sundering and a settlement of the Iconians, the name made sense on many levels. It is also a nod to Nimoy, who launched Star Trek Online.

In terms of the tactical consoles, Romulan science officers don't really have a dedicated science ship, so I tried all the ones available at the time (the launch of Legacy of Romulus) and that one was the best. It is a great ship in its own right, and the Plasma Lotus (plasma variant of the Phaser/Disruptor Lotus) gets a good boost from those Locators, and they were the best tactical consoles I could get at the time.
