Wondering how people are finding upgrading so far? Is there any benefit in having a higher school level before applying a tech upgrade? Does it reduce dil cost to apply an upgrade or improve chance of a quality improvement?

I was about to start upgrading Jem Hadar mk xi armor earlier today when I realised it would cost 950 dil to apply a 5k xp upgrade.
So I decided to hold off as it would take 11x5k upgrades to complete. Upon returning to my inventory I noticed the graphic for it had changed. So i looked at its stats and they seemed odd. I had another Jem Mk xi armor in my inv so compared the stats and sure enough the health and shield regen rates had doubled and there was an extra 15 dmg resistance.

Just to double check it wasnt a one off I ran 'Of Bajor', got a new Jem mk xi armor and it matched the original stats. Then I right clicked and selected 'upgrade item' then closed out of the upgrade item and SHAZAM I had the new graphic and stats. So it still appears as mk xi but with superior stats.
Nice way to get a free upgrade of sorts!
Make sure to switch secondary specializations based on ground/space even if you have no points in them, you still get a bonus

Commando: ground bonus: +5% weapon and melee damage
Pilot: 10% turn rate

That's without any points spent in either.
Thanks to all of you, I finally decided to get serious-er about ships, ground missions and the game in general, and promptly found a few more 'fun' things to do along the way - to wit: Tour The Galaxy. You probably all know the layout: you have 15 minutes to touch every sector block in your area of space (KDF and Fed are different, though they do overlap) and the reward is 450K of EC plus experience points.

1 week, several builds and a respec later I can now earn this fairly consistently.
The build is Risian corvette,Assimilated Subtraswarp MkXII (VR), a pair of Injector Assembly Engineering consoles (also Mk XII VR), an RCS Accelerator Mk XI Engineering (rare) console (probably would be better with a XII VR - but not at the price they wanted on the exchange!) Nothing else of note on the build.
Per notes I had found along the way, I did respec my Fed sci captain to max out the driver coil.
My route was somewhat circuitous (but works).
Starting in Pelia, move through the four sectors of Gamma Orionis, aiming for the transwarp conduit (you'll need to meander slightly to hit all four quadrants). Take the conduit to Risa sector, then head "south" to the Aldebaran sector of Eta Eridani, where you can catch the transwarp conduit to the Deferi sector. Immediately head 'north' to get the Raveh sector, then turn around and aim south for Beta Ursae. When you warp to Beta, you'll end up in the Cardassia Sector; turn west, and get the four sectors of the Zeta Andromedae Block,, ending in the Orias Sector. Warp to the Alpha Trianguli block, and slipstream west as far as possible; as soon as you hit Dorvan, head back toward Bajor sector, then aim 'east' for the Kalandra sector and the jump to Sirius Block.
You'll land in the Orion Sector; aim north to collect the Vulcan Sector, the turn west for the Regulus Block. Go straight south through all 3 sectors of Regulus, warp to Eta Eridani ( Donatu sector) then turn to move through the Archanis sector and north to Pi Canis., through the Narendra secot of Tau Dewa, then the Mylasa sector of Psi Velorum. Go west through the 3 sectors of Psi Velorum, then angle northwest to clip the corner of the Vendor Sector of Alpha Centauri. Angle through the SIerra sector, aiming for the center of Iota Pavonis, and loop through the four sectors there before heading south to catch the Teneebia Sector.
At this point you only have two sectors of Tau Dewa left, so I used the transwarp feature to jump to Tau Dewa, which if you're playing Fed, will land you in the Azure Sector. Hightail it to the Nimbus sector and you've got 450K in your assets.
Notes and advice: Clip corners. All you need to do is touch them to have them register (but if you're having lag issues, make sure they come off you list of sectors before you leave!) (I do check the list throughout the mission to see if I did get each sector.) If you're going to have a straight line run of at least 1.5 sectors (in the same block) use the slipstream. In Zeta Andromedae, Iota Pavonis and Orellius, you have to make U-turns; when this happens, I reduced my speed, made the turn, then accelerated again - but don't completely stop: 1/4 to 1/2 speed will allow you to make the turn relatively quickly and get back to speed.
Once I can afford the engines for my Rommie/KDF, I'll try to optimize a route for them.
If you've got a better route, share it!
And even if you don't have a ship that can 'make the Kessel run in under three parsecs', the rewards for the tour are darned good: 25K EC for each sector.
Thanks to Macrohead for the help in this!
I've been reading the chat about bridge officers - species, attributes, etc., - but I'm still not sure on what makes a good officer selection. Or is it really just a matter of training them right and placing the right ones on the right ships?

Does anyone have some guidelines and/or recommendations for optimizing the bridge crew?

(Yes, I realize I'm asking this question AFTER playing for four (or more?) years - but I'm finally getting serious!)
found this, thought i would share

Lists all the upgrades u get from boosting your T5 @ DR update
Not sure if anyone will get this in time, but while game was down I was watching the livestream and they gave this code out for Arc:

O4KhYl2l

Click the top left button in the arc launcher and select 'redeem a code'

They said the code will expire later today, so act fast and you might just get a Red Matter Capacitor!
I'd write a post about what I've learned on crafting in the new system, but I found one of great use, so credit and kudos to the author, here ya go:

Hello Fleet! Big Grin

If U are wanting to lvl as many toons as you can, this is your opportunity to do it ! !

I will be attempting to get you all to team together and lvl during this event. As some of you may have learned, teaming to level up can be a frustrating thing when everyone is doing different things in their grinds. Yet, I find teaming while lvling is fun and a very learning experience. It acquaints you with fellow teammates and their view points and tactics in battle. Also since the EX is doubled you both will experience and see and share in the victory of a level up!

I would love it if we had at least 3 in each lvling team and those would be:
Federation
Klingon,
Romulan - pre-affiliation
Romulan/Federation - post affiliation
Romulan/Klingon - post affiliation
The Romulan teams will stay together till the episode that you choose which affiliate you want Fed / KDF.
Then from that point I will help you or you can find same or diff teammates that have joined the same affiliation.
I will now be sending out a fleet mail to determine who is interested in teaming to lvl up during this event see you in the funnies ! lol

Hello all,

I've just started levelling another alt (KDF science), so when I hit level 12 I thought I would see if could craft anything useful with the new crafting system.

Keep in mind since the revamp I've only been running the 20 hour xp craft on a couple of captains and have managed to get a couple of skills upto level 10 with some others about level 5.

Overall crafting the components was ok but would be nice if you could select how many you needed, but with a 5 second cool down it wasn't the end of the world.

MK IV items had a 15min cool down I think it was, I made a DBB, couple of DHC, turrets, a shield and a rifle. Ship weapons all come out very rare and everything thing else was rare.

I'm pretty pleased with it so far, should save me some credits and keep my low level alts with good gear until I can make top MK items.

Anyone else done much crafting?
I somewhat expect this to be a very controversial subject. I also expect that EVERY member is asking this question at least once, or twice, or thrice.....

So here goes:
Read This.

I recommend everyone read the link above. It might make you ask a lot of questions, but that's a good thing. It also lists quite a few of the ways to earn dilithium. This list by no means is exhaustive, but it is updated by the community and does touch on some very nice points.
.

.
  1. Confiscate Contraband from Crew, buying Contraband, and Turning Contraband over to Secuirty Officer (Fed/Kling)
This is an incredibly NICE way to earn dilithium. Do not under estimate it. The best part? It's earned with very little effort on your part.
  2. Dyson Sphere: Battle Zone
This is a "global team" ground based mission that you can play all day if you choose, and earn dilithium while doing it. It's worth nothing that many people do these in a very uncouth & uncool way which often makes it harder than it needs to be. However, there is a nice way to get maximum reward and still be a team contributor. This topic warrants a separate thread even to give a guide.
  3. Elite PvE's
Do not underestimate the Reputation system and Elite PvE's. Here is where you will earn ~2000 - ~3000 dilithium in an hour with a decent team, and you are also earning marks and item drops helping you get more Energy Credits, or even additional Dilithium. As an example, Elite Omega missions reward Neural Processors which are used to make Mk XII gear, or turn in for another 1000 dilithium.
  4. Daily's:
These missions are area based, and exist all over the universe. They award a reasonable amount of dilithium. They can also reward marks for Reputation. Such as the Romulan based dailies. If you get bored with one style of play, you can do some other dailies, and then come back to doing some Elite PvE's when the cooldown is over.
those are (imho) the most widely used and most frequent ways of earning dilithium. Another one that should not be overlooked is the Mining missions. I'm not going to say these are exciting by any means. But it is a way to bring in an extra 1000 dilithium (or 5000 if you have mining claims). And it is well worth doing since you SHOULD be headed to the Fleet Mine every day anyways, you are right there with the Ferengi Asteroid mine and the fleet.

Why are you headed to the Fleet mine daily? Because PWE/Cryptic/STO limits you to 8000 refine-able dilithium in a day. This is their way of "capping" dilithium farming and controlling the market. Since dilithium is used for everything in the game this is also the main way PWE hopes to get you to spend money to buy zen to exchange to Dilithium. Well, the Fleet mine will allow you to refine another 500 dilithium making it a 8500 maximum refined dilithium daily.

last but not least, this is a "well known trick" that PWE has not chosen to patch and it seems they are ok with this so there is no reason not to take advantage of it:
If you have alts on the same account, (or make new characters on the same account so you now have alts), you can transfer dilithium between these characters. So it is possible for you to earn and refine 8500 dilithium on each character and then transfer it all to a main character. So if you are playing for free, you can get 8500 * 2 = 17000 dilithium a day. If you buy zen (with money or dilithium), you can unlock up to 40 character slots so 8500 * 40 = 340,000 dilithium a day is not impossible (but I can't imagine anyone would want to do this).

So, with all this said, what are your thoughts and or suggestions?
